Project Discovery students attend Summer Bridge Program

CVCA’s Project Discovery is happy to announce that three students were awarded scholarships to attend the Radford University and Dominion Resources’ Summer Bridge Program at Radford University.  The scholarships were made possible by Project Discovery Inc. and the Wachovia Foundation.  Raven Hatfield, Jessica Gillespie, and Juanita Montaigne attend the week long program from July 11 to the 16.   The program offered the students a glimpse into college life and science, math, and technology disciplines.  The program was for rising sophomore, junior and senior high school girls.

Along with other eager high school students from across the state they participated in a variety of activities.  The group collected bones, as well as a handful of items from some shallow make-shift graves at the Selu Conservancy as part of a mock crime scene set up by Radford University Forensic Science Institute.  They learn things such as determining the age and height of the person when they died and what stage of growth they were in when they died.

The goal of the week-long residential program was to introduce female high school students to future educational and professional opportunities available to them in mathematics, science and information technology fields.

In addition to solving crimes using the latest archaeological and biotechnology techniques, the girls delved into the world of code breaking, learned how to protect sensitive computer systems from cyber attackers and explored environmental science using technologically advanced GPS systems and field research to analyze the health of rivers.

Following four challenging days, learning-packed days, the girls gave PowerPoint presentations on Friday describing their week's work and educating family and friends about cryptography, the chemical and physical characteristics of the New River and mitochondrial DNA.

The program hopes the student have gain ambition for things they never thought they would do and the use what they learned in their future education.

David Anderson was appointed to the Project Discovery State Advisory Board. On June 7 & 8, 2010, he attended his training and participated in his first State Advisory Board Meeting in Virginia Beach, VA. Dave was instrumental in assisting the Project Discovery Program during the 2009/2010 program year when our program received a $4,500.00 budget reduction in September 2009. He worked with the other members of the Tazewell County Board of Supervisor’s to secure a donation to offset this reduction. We greatly appreciate the time and effort he has exhibited in assisting our students to truly reach horizons unknown! If more information about Project Discovery, please contact Val Wimmer or Ricky Honaker at 988-5583.

Project Discovery on the move

Project Discovery is a high school drop-out prevention/college access  program open to middle and high school students in grades 6-12.  This program is available to students who meet one or more of the following eligibility requirements:  low-income; first generation college student and/or recipient of free or reduced lunch; however, under certain circumstances we may enroll students who do not meet the general criteria.

Our program focus shifts from the middle school students to the high school students.  We primarily focus on college readiness with our high school population by participating in four college trips each program year.  This allows students the chance to gain a better perspective on the type of college that is right for them.  We visit community colleges, private colleges and public colleges.  We also coordinate our trips to visit big versus small universities.  Our senior students also receive SAT and College Application Fee Waivers that may be used for up to three colleges.

Middle school students are more involved in leadership development activities and high school preparedness workshops focusing on goal setting, study skills, etc.  Our trips with the middle school students are focused on expanding their awareness of local community resources such as arts and culture, fitness, etc.

In the CVCA Gallery is a picture that was taken during our first high school trip to Bluefield College on 10/24/09.  We had 19 high school students in attendance.  We received a tour of the college that focused on financial aid assistance, choice of curriculums available and a visit to the housing facilities for the students.  We also participated in the open house activities on campus that day and were treated to a barbeque lunch with all the trimmings.

There are also photos taken at our first Orientation Workshop on 10/08/09 for both middle and high school students.

Upcoming Events for 11/09:

11/14/09         High School trip to Virginia Tech

11/24/09         Study Skills Workshop

Middle School swimming trip to the Tazewell YMCA
