Today’s parents face many challenges in raising happy and healthy children.  Parenting well is extremely important, but it also can be extremely difficult.  However, according to Active Parenting, a leading parent education provider, the purpose of parenting remains the same: “to protect and prepare our children to survive and thrive in the kind of society in which they live.”

In order to assist parents, Clinch Valley Community Action, Inc. is offering Parenting Classes in August at the Main Office in Tazewell at 200 East Riverside Drive.  All classes will be held from 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M. beginning Wednesday, August 25, 2010. The classes will use the Active Parenting NOW curriculum, and will focus on children ages 1-4.  Space is limited, and the classes cost $25.00, which includes a workbook. For more information or to register, please call Jennifer Bourne at (276) 988-5583 by Monday, August 23, 2010.

Family Crisis Services, a joint domestic violence and sexual assault program of Clinch Valley Community Action, Inc., seeks energetic, dependable and self-motivated individuals to work as Volunteer Advocates.  Volunteers are needed to cover day and night shifts at the shelter, to answer the hotline, to provide child care and emergency transportation, to provide office support, to assist with public awareness and fundraisers, and to serve as court advocates.

Volunteer Advocates provide companionship, a friendly face, and a listening ear to victims and their families. This job requires a great deal of tact, empathy, understanding and emotional maturity.  Volunteers should also respect confidentiality, display a responsible work ethic and work well with people.
