Project Discovery

Helping Students Help Themselves

Project Discovery is funded through the Virginia Department of Education, United Way of the Virginias and community support. The program works with Tazewell County middle and high school students of Tazewell County.  Currently, Project Discovery is serving 61 students.

There is no cost to the student to join. The purpose of Project Discovery is to enhance the knowledge of first generation students and their parents of post-secondary education. This is accomplished through workshops and college campus visits.  There are at least seven college campus visits throughout the year.  Every trip is chaperoned by volunteers and parents along with Project Discovery staff.

Project Discovery offers SAT and ACT fee waivers and waivers for college applications.  The office has information on all colleges and will gather any information requested by the student or parent.  The office also writes letters of recommendation and helps with other referrals.

Project Discovery has been serving Tazewell County middle and high school students for over sixteen (16) years.

Additionally, the program provides students with workshops that focus on the following, but not limited to:

  • Self-esteem
  • Goal Setting
  • Study Skills
  • Time Management
  • Test Taking Skills
  • Choosing a College
  • Financial Aid
  • Preparing for SATs
  • Social Pressures
  • Choosing a Career
  • Finding a Job
  • Self Improving

Each student is to attend and participate in a workshop and field trip once a month.
